About Spas in Puerto Vallarta… By The PVMirror Staff • Photos by Jesús de Avila • June 2009.
Everyone loves a good massage, or a facial, or some other indulgent spa treatment. But not everyone can pamper her or himself like a Hollywood celebrity. For most, these are luxury items, and not part of one’s regular work week.
The spas in Puerto Vallarta are ideal places for visitors to escape from the daily routine, rejuvenate the mind and body, and enjoy healthy living. Thanks to its privileged location, nestled between the foothills of the Sierra Madre and the Bay of Banderas, its superb climate and modern facilities offer the very best combination for our visitors and residents.
When you need pampering, you shouldn't waste your valuable time and money by going to an unprofessional or inexperienced therapist. Spa resorts, hotels, haciendas and specialized health and beauty centers in Puerto Vallarta and surroundings provide the very best in different options for those visitors looking for new alternatives in tourism during their stay.
The best hotels in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit have modern spas -and gyms-, offering a wide range of treatments for a truly unique experience. The more luxurious spas use scented oils and flowers to "awaken the senses" externally, or temazcal steam baths of pre-Hispanic origin, which use various medicinal plants and herbs to treat muscular and even emotional problems, while cleansing the body and skin, and even helping to prevent certain illnesses.
If you want to find an exotic destination retreat, or just an everyday spa for a facial, the choice of treatments available in this town’s spas is endless. Among massages alone, there are therapeutic ones, reducing, deep tissue, Swedish, Reiki, Chakra, and the list goes on. To those we can add aromatherapy, acupuncture, mud baths, treatments using an algae-based gel, gold or chocolate, facials – all used for the relaxation and harmony of the body and mind.
As women became increasingly aware of the benefits of visiting a spa, more and more hotels began incorporating them into their services. In time, men realized that a sports massage could improve their golf game, while a facial could keep them looking younger, and they started visiting them as well. Today, these palaces of pampering have become a multi-billion dollar industry. Hotel spas not only offer a wide range of services that can make customers of either gender look and feel better, they also have a distinct advantage: after a relaxing treatment, spa-goers can walk back to their on-site accommodations or relax by the pool instead of raising stress levels having to fight traffic on their way home.
The spas in Puerto Vallarta’s and Riviera Nayarit’s hotels are veritable sanctuaries, havens where life's stresses can be massaged away. If you're looking for the perfect place to unwind, bodily bliss awaits you in our sunny destination. Whether you want a new lip gloss that will plump your pout or a high-tech skincare tool, the spa products available here will help you look and feel your best – and you don't have to take out a loan to enjoy it all.
About massages…
Massage may be the oldest and simplest form of medical care. Egyptian tomb paintings show people being massaged. In Eastern cultures, massage has been practiced continually since ancient times. A Chinese book from 2,700 B.C., The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, recommends “breathing exercises, massage of skin and flesh, and exercises of hands and feet" as the appropriate treatment for “complete paralysis, chills, and fever." It was one of the principal method of relieving pain for Greek and Roman physicians. Julius Caesar was said to have been given a daily massage to treat neuralgia. "The Physician Must Be Experienced In Many Things," wrote Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, in the 5th century B. C., "but assuredly in rubbing... for rubbing can bind a joint that is too loose, and loosen a joint that is too rigid."
The most popular treatment at a spa is the massage (from the Greek root “masso," which means to touch), but you can also get massage from individual local licensed therapists who work out of their home or come to your house or condo with a table.
There are many different types of massage, including deep tissue, sports massage, hot stone, aromatherapy, lymphatic drainage, trigger point therapy, craniosacral therapy, neuromuscular therapy and myofascial release, watsu Rolfing, reflexology, Shiatsu, Thai massage and Ayurvedic massage like abhyanga.
Swedish massage is the best for beginners; it is the most popular style of massage in the U.S. It is very relaxing and a good choice for first-time spagoers. A basic Swedish massage is 50-60 minutes long and involves the stroking of skin and kneading of muscles. It is performed by a licensed massage therapist, who uses oil to lubricate the skin. You are usually nude but covered by sheets. Obviously, the cost of massage varies, depending on who performs it, and where. Email to a friend
