Don Guadalupe Sanchez Torres , who was born in Jalisco, founded this area in 1851. He named it Peñas de Santa Maria. In 1918, during the Mexican revolution, the village was renamed Puerto Vallarta in honor of Ignacio L. Vallarta, then governor of the State of Jalisco, who greatly contributed to the modernization of the state and of its former fishing village. The famous film "The Night of the Iguana" starring Ava Gardner and Richard Burton, brought fame and popularity to Puerto Vallarta, causing hundreds of people to visit the Mismaloya beach, just outside of town, where the movie was shot. It is said that the jungle itself nourished the torrid romance of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, who spread the word about the town. Puerto Vallarta, with its cobblestone streets that wind lazily around mountainsides, traditional shops with red tile roofs and powdery white beaches that frame beautiful blue waters and spectacular sunsets has it all: a laid-back charm, unparalleled climate, every kind of fun you can imagine as well as every modern comfort and amenity. Indeed, this location's rapid transformation has produced a vacationer's paradise; all amenities of 'civilized living' in the midst of a secluded and picturesque tropical beauty. Lastly, regardless of where you stay, Puerto Vallarta is a very safe community and its residents are friendly , thus virtually guaranteeing that a good time is to be had by all.

Spanish is the language of Mexico, although English is widely spoken. Mexicans welcome even the most halting attempts to use their language. A few key words plus gestures can convey a world of meaning.

Given Puerto Vallarta's temperate climate, outdoor attire in Puerto Vallarta is an expression of individual freedom. In the morning, comfortable casual wear is suggested. At the beach, people wear bathing suits or caftans of processed cotton which are often painted or embroidered with designs. Cheerful and exotic hats are worn, sometimes with flowers in them. Also, shell and shellfish necklaces and earrings adorn the body. In town, Puerto Vallarta's nightlife entices us to wear our most eccentric and elegant clothing.

Puerto Vallarta is on Central Standard Time. When it is 9.00 a.m. in Puerto Vallarta, it is 7.00 a.m. in Los Angeles (Pacific Standard Time) and 10.00 a.m. in New York (Eastern Standard Time). From April to October Puerto Vallarta is on Central Daylight time.
